Hello fellow cafe lovers!
Axil Coffee Roasters is located in Hawthorn on Burwood Road, just a short walk from Glenferrie train station and Swinburne University of Technology. This café is a perfect stop for both business people and university students to visit for either breakfast or on their lunchtime break. With excellent service and great tasting food, you can’t go wrong with this café.

I have been to this café a number of times over the past few years and the service and the standard of their food has never been anything but amazing. Being a coffee snob, it’s safe to say that they have some of the best coffee in Melbourne. It was seen in an episode of The Real Housewives of Melbourne which truly shows that this is one of Melbourne most trendy café’s and a must visit for all café lovers.
FOOD & DRINKS
With an excellent menu with a number of choices of mouth watering lunches and tasty all day breakfasts. Axil provides their customers with ‘treat for yourself’ meals, one that any gym junkie will give into. This was their menu in April 2015, so it might have changed since I went.

I went to Axil recently on two different occasions, with two different friends.
The first trip I ordered the red velvet pancakes and I must say they were some of the best pancakes I have ever eaten. Move over red velvet cupcakes, these pancakes should become the next big trend to our shores. Everything on the plate complemented each other and helped to balance out all the flavours and textures. The black sesame ice cream was something that I had never tried before and never thought I would, but I am so glad that I did because it was amazing!

My friend Tiana who doesn’t normally eat eggs ordered the spicy baked eggs and she loved them. She said that the dish had the right amount of spice, just enough to give it the flavour that it needed, but not to much to become over powering. The crunch of the sourdough toast and the saltiness of the feta added another level to the taste and texture of baked eggs, making every bite as enjoyable as the last.

The second time around I ordered the waffles, this shows that I have such a sweet tooth and will normally order sweet over savoury when I am out at a café. Anyway, it was just amazing as good as it looks. I am a huge fan of peanut butter and anything that has peanut butter is a winner for me. The parfait helps to balance out the sweetness that the chocolate bought to the dish, while the banana helped to add softer texture to the crunch of the waffles. The serving many look small, but the pure richness of all the elements will fill you up before you know it.

My other friend Maddy ordered the crumbed chicken and she couldn’t stop raving about how great it was. She said that it was one of the nicest café lunches that she has had in a while and stated that she would be bringing her other friends here soon. She said that the crumb on the chicken wasn’t too thick that it would dry the chicken out. Having cabbage slaw instead of the normal green salad was a pleasant change, with the mint bringing a refreshing feeling to the dish.

Finally, she accompanied it with a refreshing watermelon and lychee drink. Perfect to help anyone cool down and feel refreashed on these hot days in Melbourne during the summer months. She said that it was delicious and that she would definitely recommend it.

ENVIRONMENT & SERVICE
Axil have friendly and helpful staff who are there to answer any questions from where their coffee is from to explaining elements on the menu.
The coffee (and other drinks) and meals were served quickly and we did not have to wait very long and they were absolutely delicious.
With a large interior with an industrial feel and seating outside, Axil have plenty of space for everyone. Even though it has a very industrial feel, it is still has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. As it can get quite busy, I would highly recommend that you get their early, before 10’o clock on a Saturday and before 12 during the week for lunch.
ACTIVITIES TO DO IN THE AREA
After you have finished your meal why not head up to Glenferrie road and have a look at the shops, there are a number of small boutiques that has something for everyone.

Hi Kim,
Awesome blog i’m looking forward to your next one!!
I was just wondering if they offer dietary alternatives? I have a friend who is gluten intolerant and another who is a vegetarian. Are there options for them?
Thanks

Hi Madelyn,
Thanks for your comment. Yes there are a number of dietary alternatives for customers that need them. Axil offer a number of options for vegetarians in both their breakfast and lunch menu (have a look at the menus pictured above). For people suffering from celiac disease or gluten intolerant Axil offer delicious gluten free bread (i have tried it before) as an alternative for other bread served. They also have a number of choices on the lunch menu that are gluten free.
I would highly recommend that you bring your friends here, i’m sure you will all really enjoy it.

Thanks for the great info Kim, this cafe sounds awesome. They sound like they have some really diverse food choices. The black sesame ice cream sounds very interesting indeed. Do you know if they offer Soy as an option as I am dairy intolerant. I look forward to trying this cafe very soon 🙂

Hi Ann,
Thank you for your comment. I understand that they would have soy as an option for their coffee’s, but i’m not sure if they have that option for their meals. Looking at their menu they only offer one dairy free meal which is the Beechwood smoked duck breast. But i’m sure if you ask your waiter they might be able to sort something out for you.
Hopefully that helps you and I hope that if you do visit Axil Cafe that you really enjoy it.
