Mr. Hendricks (Balwyn) 8/10

Hello cafe lovers!!

Located just outside the hustle and bustle of the city, Mr. Hendricks can be found on Whitehorse Road in Balwyn.
This café is perfect for that quick lunch with work colleagues during the week or with the family on the weekend. With tables out the front, inside and out the back (with outdoor heaters), there is plenty of room for everyone, during all seasons. With plenty of parking along the side streets there is no excuse not to pay them a visit. I went there recently with one of my close friends Tiana, whose mom suggested that try it out. We were excited as we love going to café’s together and sitting there catching up on life events. We really enjoyed it and would say it’s a café that locals should add to their list.

FOOD & DRINKS

Mr. Hendricks has an excellent menu, a good mix of sweet and savoury items offering something for even the fussiest of eaters, the chefs at Mr. Hendricks know who to put a smile on everyone’s dial. This was the menu in April 2015 and may have changed since then.

As usual when I go to a café I have a latte, which is my go to coffee when I’m out and about and I have been drinking them for years. I have to say that this coffee wasn’t the best that I’ve have had and would recommend that they make it slightly stronger in the future. So you might want to suggest that if you happen to like your coffee particularly strong. But I loved the glass it was served in and love the design on the top.

Latte ($3.50)

Tiana had her usual which is a chai latte, it was presented so beautifully, but she had the same feedback saying that it needed to be stronger. Just something to keep in mind when ordering coffee there.

I ordered the avocado on toast and added a poached egg. There is nothing I love more than having avocado on toast, I love the creamy taste and soft and fluffy feel against the crunchiness of the toast. By adding the poached egg the soft yolk adds richness to the dish making it even more delicious. The fetta that accompanies the dish add an extra creamy element and brings in a salty flavour that ties the whole dish together. The green bean and mint salad adds a fresh feeling bite after bite.

Tiana also ordered the avocado on toast, but added bacon and a potato hash instead of a poached egg. She said that she loved the meal and that the added bacon also added an extra level of richness and the crunchy texture which made her smile even more. The potato hash is a must try when visiting Mr. Hendricks, as its crunchy exterior and warm and soft interior puts a smile on your face, making every bite worth the calories they contain.

ENVIRONMENT & SERVICE

As said before Mr. Hendricks has a number of table seating options. May I suggest sitting out at the back, even on a cold Melbourne day it still gives you that feeling of warmth. This outside area would also be beautiful during the summer months, due to the plants that surround it, which makes you feel as if your were eating in the country side. The service was wonderful; all the staff members were very welcoming and always had big smiles on their faces (maybe they have been eating the potato hashes). Meals came out relatively quickly which was great because we were both so hungry.

  1. Hello Kim,
Would you say that Mr. Hendricks offered plenty of healthy options/high protein alternatives within their menu (I’m trying to bulk up for my next body-building competition)?

    1. Hi Abed,
Looking at their menu (see photo above) it seems that the only good source of protein that you might be interested in will come in the form of eggs. Mr. Hendricks offers a number of healthy and tasty breakfasts that contain eggs. The breakfast menu also allows you to add extras, so you’re able to add extra eggs to your meals if you want. Their menu is relatively healthy and would be a great treat for you after your workout.

Good luck with the next competition.

  3. I love that you reviewed Mr. Hendricks! I’ve heard about it but haven’t actually been because I wasn’t sure what it’d be like so this was great to read.
I’m also a fan of smashed avo so I’ll have to try this place out when I get the chance to heard over that way! Does the feta sit on top, rather than get mixed in though?

    1. Hi Ashleigh,
I’m so glad that i found this place, its in my local area and I know that i’ll visit it again soon. The Fetta does sit on top of the smashed avo and from memory come in large chunks, which I prefer just incase I don’t like the fetta so its easy to pick off.

Let me know what you think of it when you visit them

    1. Hi Madelyn,

There are a number of buses that go down that main road which would proberly be the best mode of public transport due to the nearest train station being Mont Albert Station 2.6 km away.
Hopefully that answers your question, let me know if you need anymore information

    1. The food at Mr. Hendricks was fabulous, we really enjoyed our visit. Hill Top Cakes smelt amazing when we walked in, the smell of freshly baked cakes could be smelt outside the shop. Maybe you can get a take away coffee and then get some cake from the cake shop and enjoy both at the same time.
I hope that you enjoy it
