How’s it going cafe lovers?
Located just off Glenferrie road, Liar Liar is known as one of Hawthorn’s best cafés.
It has a beautiful interior with an industrial feel due to the exposed pipes in the ceiling, the polished concrete floor and beautiful pendant lights, makes it look like something you’d see on the Block. This has been one of my go to cafés in the past. It was one of my favourites for lunches and coffee in between classes during my undergrad years. It is a very popular café and during its busy times you normally have to wait for a table, but let me tell you it’s worth waiting for.
Parking isn’t the easiest to find on Glenferrie road, so I would suggest parking down the side streets or taking public transport. Glenferrie station is only a 5-10 minute walk from Liar Liar and there are also a number of trams that run up and down Glenferrie road that stops almost outside the café.
The following are from two different trips, both with my friend Tiana. I love going to cafés with her, it gives us a good chance to catch up and spend time together.
FOOD & DRINKS
Liar Liar has a fabulous menu, with delicious choices to suit any taste. Everything on the menu sounds so tasty and therefore encourages you to go back and try everything! (Menu and prices are from May 2015 and could have changed)
The coffee here is amazing and is worth the walk from the Uni campus. It is presented so beautifully, I love the glass that is used. The coffee here is slightly cheaper than other cafés in the area, which is great and means you can have more than one cup and not feel as bad. Liar Liar also have a large range of other drinks to choose from and from what I hear their milkshakes are to die for.
Coffee rating: 5/5
The first time around we went for breakfast and I order the ricotta hotcakes. They were marvellous!! The outside was golden and crunchy and the inside was soft and sweet. The almond cream was something that I had never had before, but thought it was a fabulous addition to the dish. It helped add an extra richness and helped to break up the sweetness from the maple syrup. Once again it looked like an artwork on the plate, the beautiful pink colouring from the berry coulis against the white plate, bough the dish to life and made it look so tasty.
Tiana had the smashed avocado with feta, maple glazed bacon and a poached egg on sourdough toast. She really seemed to enjoy it and said that it was delicious and very filling. She is a huge fan of bacon and said that the maple glazed bacon was fantastic and said she’d like to try it at home. Everything on the plate complemented each other; she said that the smoothness of the avocado accompanied the crunchy sourdough toast perfectly and that the sweetness of the maple syrup glaze on the bacon cancelled out the usually over powering saltiness that bacon usually has. She said that she would highly recommend the dish and can’t wait to go back and have it again.
The second time we went for lunch and I ordered the BLAT. The serving size was quite larger for the price you pay ($13) and thought that it was very reasonable. I have been to so many places in the past where you would pay almost $20 for the same serving size. It was really tasty and would be a perfect meal for anyone looking for some comfort food. Tiana had the lamb burger and she loved it! Tiana is a huge burger fan and loves going to different places to try them out. She said that it was one of the best lamb burgers she’s had in a while and would recommend that anyone who loves lamb should try it out.
ENVIRONMENT & SERVICE
There are quite a few seating options inside, but not so many outside. This is disappointing as it would be marvellous to sit outside in the warmer months and drink your cup of coffee with a group of friends or just sit and watch the world go about their busy day. The café has a great ambiance, with people coming and going, both business people and mothers with their children coming in for their daily kick of caffeine. The service is fantastic and the staff a really friendly and you feel welcomed as soon as you walk in. The food came out really quickly, which is fantastic as the place is always busy.
ACTIVITIES TO DO IN THE AREA
If you’re tired of looking at the stores on Glenferrie road, why not head down to bridge road in Richmond. It’s only at 10-minute drive or a short train trip to Richmond station and you’ll be there.
Bridge Road has a number of fabulous boutiques as well as the well known stores like Sports Girl. This website will tell you everything you need to know about Bridge Road and what it has to offer. http://www.bridgerd.com.au
