Hiya cafe lovers!
Just a short walk from Melbourne’s famous Chapel Street sits one of the areas most historical buildings, Como House.
This beautiful old house was built over 160 years ago in 1847 with the house being rumoured to be named after Lake Como in Italy. The Armytage family handed the house over to the National Trust in 1959, with the house still furnished by the furniture left behind by the family.

The Stables of Como sits next to the big house and embodies a country estate feel in a inner city urban environment. The peaceful surroundings of the gardens makes it feel as if you are in the country and helps you to relax and get away from your busy city life.
FOOD & DRINKS
The Stables has quite a large menu, with many choices for breakfast and lunch. They option of having high tea, which offers a wide range of delicious cakes which can be seen in their display windows. I’m sorry to say that i forgot to take a photo of the menu, but click here for the menu.
The coffee here is terrific! As a coffee lover i would definitely recommend it! Unlike other cafes i have been to in the past, the coffee at the Stables is strong and it doesn’t leave an awful bitter taste in your mouth.
Coffee rating: 3/5
I always seem to order the same types of meals when i go to these cafes, i guess i’m just a creature of habit. I always promise myself i will try something different and then chicken out at the last minute and go with my favourite dishes.
I ordered the smashed avocado with feta and a poached egg. I have eaten a similar dish at a number of cafes in the past and I have to say that this is one of the best dishes that I have ever had! If you loved smashed avocado, i would HIGHLY recommend that you try this. The saltiness of the feta tied the whole dish together and didn’t overpower the dish as other feta’s can. The chilli that accompanied the dish added another delicious element to the dish, something that most cafes don’t even think of.
The only negative about The Stables is that some of their meals on their menu can have a rather small serving size which can be rather disappointing if you super hungry. Maybe double check with the wait staff on the size of the meal when ordering.
ENVIRONMENT & SERVICE
There are plenty of tables to sit at both inside and out with beautiful views of the old house and of the garden. Outside during the winter months the plastic cafe blinds are closed and the outside heaters are turned on to help keep the warmth in. This allows you to still enjoy the beauty of your surroundings while not losing feeling in your toes from Melbourne’s icy winters.
The staff are very friendly and make you feel very welcome. Due to the cafe being very popular, the service is a little bit slow and can take some time before they come and take your order.
