South Society (Mount Waverley ) 7.5/10

How’s it going café lovers?

IMG_1214Welcome back to Cards and Cafés! I came across South Society on Instagram after they had liked a number of my photos. After looking at their page, I loved the look of their food and knew that I had to add it to my list of must try cafés.

I ended up going one Wednesday morning with my friend Beth. It was really easy to find and lucky for us finding a parking spot was easy as it’s right next to Pinewood Shopping Centre on Blackburn Road.

We both thought that it was a lovely café and loved that they had plenty of tables inside and out. The employees were all really friendly and gave us a warm welcoming smile when we walked in.

FOOD & DRINKS

The menu was a good size and had a good number of options. We both loved the names that were given to their smoothies and thought they were quite creative and left us wondering why one of them was called the Caitlyn Jenner.

These photos of the menu were taken in early May 2016 and might have changed.

The latte was pretty good; it was really strong and had a fantastic rich flavour. It was nice and hot when it came to the table and stayed hot for quite some time. It was slightly more expensive than other cafés I’ve been to in the past, but I didn’t mind paying that 20 cents more.

Beth ended up ordering the South Society stack, which was served with a leek and potato croquette, sautéed spinach, mixed sautéed mushrooms and a poached egg with toasted sesame seeds. For those who don’t know what a croquette is, as I didn’t know when I first saw it on the menu, a croquette can be described as a small breadcrumbed fried food roll usually stuffed with mashed potato or meat.

Beth said that the croquette itself had an unbelievable taste. She said that it was lovely and crunchy on the outside and smooth and silky on the inside. There’s nothing better than that crunchy sound as you cut into the croquette. When you hear that crunch you know that its been cooked to perfection! She loved that the filling was smooth and had no chunks in it and she said that it was seasoned perfectly.

Beth said that the mushrooms were a good fit to the dish and that they had a nice flavour, but she didn’t finish them, as she wasn’t in a mushroom eating mood.

I ordered the lemon French toast, which was served with lemon mascarpone, berry compote, maple and toasted almonds. When it arrived at the table I was surprised at the size of the serving, as I wasn’t expecting it to be so large. It was almost enough for two people due to its richness.

I loved the lemon mascarpone as it helped to cut out the sweetness that the maple and the berry compote brought to the dish. I’ve found that French toast can sometimes be so bitterly sweet that you feel sick after eating it, but this one was delicious and the lemon concept definitely made this dish. The lemon mascarpone was so smooth and left your mouth feeling silky after each mouth full. Every bite was as enjoyable as the last, with every element working together to make the dish amazing! Beth tried some of my meal and she really enjoyed it and said that she wished she’d picked it and that she would definitely be coming back for some in the future.

ENVIRONMENT & SERVICE

South Society is located on Blackburn Road and is next to Pinewood Shopping Centre, so it’s very easy to find and the best thing is that parking is a breeze!

South Society is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and judging by the large amount of floor space, I can only imagine how popular they are. We were there on a Wednesday for brunch and were surprised how busy they got. If they are that busy during the week, I can only imagine how busy they must get on the weekend during the breakfast/early lunchtime rush.
I would suggest getting there before 10:30 in the morning on the weekends and 11:00 am during the week to ensure you get a table. As I said they have a number of tables inside the café, as well as a number of tables outside.

The employees were all so friendly and polite and they all welcomed us where we walked in as if we were long lost friends. We were disappointed at the amount of time it took for someone to take our order. We also felt that our food took longer than expected to come out of the kitchen. They weren’t that busy at the time of ordering and were unsure what was taking so long.
