Rumour Mill (Croydon) 7.5/10

Greeting café lovers!

IMG_1567Welcome back to Cards and Cafés! I found Rumour Mill by sheer chance one Saturday afternoon when I was visiting McAdam Square. I saw Rumour Mill out of the corner of my eye and looked up their menu online and knew that I had to put it on my café list.

As I see my friend Beth every week, where we usually go for breakfast and a catch up I knew that this would be a perfect café is try as we hadn’t tired a café in Croydon before.

As Rumour Mill is located within McAdam Square, which is a small shopping complex, it was pretty easy to find and parking was a breeze!

When we arrived on a Friday morning, it was already quite busy are we were lucky to find a table. This looks like it’s a local favourite so getting there early, especially on the weekends is probably best if you don’t want to wait.

Rumour Mill has quite an extensive menu; they have a number of mouth-watering breakfast dishes to choose from as well as a number of appetising lunches. Their milkshake and smoothie selections look delicious and are something that I might have to go back and try.

The following menu photos were taken in the middle of May 2016 and might have changed since then.

I ordered my usual latte, which came quite quickly after ordering. It was very hot when it arrived and I had to leave it to cool down for a few minutes before I could drink it. It was a relatively good coffee, it had a good flavour and it was strong enough for me. It wasn’t something I would go out of my way to go and get, but it wasn’t awful.

After seeing the milkshakes Beth decided to treat herself and order one. She loved the sound of the salted caramel milkshake, which came with soymilk. She wished that she could just have regular milk, as she didn’t want any of the other vegan options. She felt that the coconut ice cream that was used was too over powering and didn’t like the mock salted caramel flavour. She said it tasted all right, but it wasn’t anything to write home about.

Beth ordered the brown sugar pancakes with poached apple, fig, Canadian maple syrup, cinnamon and black pepper parfait and pistachios. She said that they were quite dense and filling which she loved, as she was quite hungry. She also loved that there was plenty of maple syrup so they weren’t to dry. We’ve been to so many places in the past and the kitchen never seems to put enough syrup or sauce on the pancakes. So thank you Rumour Mill for being so generous with the maple syrup.

She also thought that the cinnamon flavour complemented the poached apples and the pancakes perfectly and gave it an incredible flavour that was not over powering.

I ordered the raspberry and banana smoothie bowl, which came with Paleo granola, chia seeds and strawberries. I’ve never ordered anything like this before and I was excited to try something new. It has to one of the healthiest breakfasts I’ve had in a while. It was like eating a crunchy smoothie. I thought that the banana and raspberry combination was great! It was ice cold and very refreshing. I’d had the flu that week so the cold smoothie was such a relief on my sore throat. I thought that the granola was incredible! It had such a great flavour and I loved the crunchy contrast against the smooth smoothie and the soft strawberries. It also came with shaved coconut with added an extra flavour kick. It had a smooth and soft texture, which worked well with the rest of the dish.

I would definitely eat this dish again as I loved the freshness of the dish and the flavours of the fruits. I would also recommend it to anyone looking for a simple and healthy meal.

As I said before Rumour Mill is located in McAdam Square in Croydon and is very easy to find due to its large sign outside. Parking is a breeze due to the large parking area outside the café and another closer to the other stores.

The staff members are relatively friendly and welcomed us with warm smiles. They were very eager to take our order, but we weren’t ready and it seemed that they forgot about us as it took at least another 10 minutes for them to come back.

The drinks and food arrived quite quickly after ordering which was a surprise as they were quite busy.

There are a large number of tables inside and it felt quite spacious even though it was quite busy. The exposed brick walls and earthy colours gave the café a nice rustic feel.
