Piatella Café (Glen Waverley) 7/10

Holla café lovers!

IMG_1948Welcome back to Cards and Cafés! I recently went out from brunch with my friend Simone, we hadn’t seen each other in a while and we thought that it was about time that we caught up. The last time we caught up was when we went to Now and Not Yet  in Warrandyte, if you haven’t seen that review I suggest you check it out.

Piatella is one of Simone’s favourite places to eat and because I hadn’t been there before she thought that it would be a great place to meet.

The café is pretty easy to find as it is in the shopping/restaurant strip right next to The Glen shopping centre. Parking was pretty easy to find on that particular day, but I’ve been in that area at night and you can drive around for ages! If you can’t find a parking spot in the main parking area, you can always park near Dan Murphies, which is just a bit further done the road.

FOOD & DRINKS

Piatella has a fantastic menu that has a great selection of breakfasts, lunches and dinners and everything in between. This café caters for all meals times, including morning and afternoon tea as they have a great selection of cakes and macaroons to choose from.

I order a latte as I usually do when visiting cafés. It came out quicker then I thought it would have. I thought that the coffee was average; it was also quite cold when it arrived at the table, which was quite disappointing. The flavour was ok, but I personally thought that it was quite watery and I would have preferred it to have a creamery and richer flavour. But I loved the yellow saucer that the coffee was served on.

As Simone isn’t a huge fan of breakfasts she ordered the steak sandwich, which was served with prime steak on crusty seeded bread, caramelised onions, Piatella relish, tasty cheese, field mushrooms, salad and seeded mustard with a side of home style chunky chips. It’s also nice to notes that gluten free bread is also available if needed.

She said that she’d had this dish before and thought it was delicious and thought she’d try it again. She wasn’t disappointed as it was just and fabulous as the last time. She said that they steak was cooked perfected and was quite tender and easy to eat. The Piatella relish had a great flavour and went really well with the steak and the field mushrooms.

She said that it was a very filling and thought that it was a great hearty meal to have during these cold winter months. She would definitely recommend it to those looking for a hearty meal or those who are fans of steak or steak sandwiches.

I ordered the Just Smashing, which was seeded toast, with a layer of smashed avocado, smoked salmon, Danish feta and toasted sunflower gremolata, drizzled with extra virgin olive oil, and I added some poached eggs.

I’m not usually a fan of smoked salmon, but I thought that it went really well wish this dish. It beats the boring old avocado smash that all cafés in Melbourne seem to have and it’s always interesting to try something new or an old favourite with a twist.

I thought that the avo itself was seasoned very well and the saltiness from the feta and salmon added an extra depth of flavour to the avo.

The poached eggs were cooked well and the runny egg yolks tasted great with the fresh avo and the rich smoked salmon.

It was a huge serving size and I just managed to finish the dish and I was left happy and full for the rest of the afternoon.

I thought that it was a great dish and would recommend it to any avo smash fans out there.

ENVIRONMENT & SERVICE

IMG_1951Piatella has quite a large floor space with a number of tables outside the front of the café and a large number of tables inside. We went on a late Sunday morning just after the breakfast rush and just before the lunch rush, so it was easy to find a table. I would imagine that it could be quite difficult to find a seat during the lunch rush and during the evening during dinnertime.

Piatella is a family friendly place and they are able to cater for large groups.

The service was ok, the employees were friendly enough and the food came out in a reasonable time.
