Short Straw (Hawthorn) 8/10

What’s new café lovers?

IMG_2508Welcome back to Cards and Cafés! I hope you’ve all been well and are ready to come on another food adventure with me. Once again I drove out to my favourite areas, Hawthorn to tick another café off my list. Once again my good friend Beth came out with me and we really enjoyed our time at Short Straw. We both thought that it was a fantastic café, with incredibly food and coffee and great customer service to match.

Short Straw is located on Glenferrie Road and is right near Swinburne University of Technology and is a great café to catch up with friends or to grab a quick meal before you have to get back to the office or to class. The cafe is brought to you by the same team that started Touchwood, Coin Laundry, Station Street Trading Co, Tall Timber and Left Field.

There are quite a number of places to park, with street parking along Glenferrie Road, as well as down the side streets that run along the main road.

Short Straw has an excellent menu; both Beth and I struggle to pick what we wanted to eat. There were so many delicious sounding meals that we needed more time than normally to make our decision.

The following menu photo was taken in July 2016 and might have changed since.

Short Straw Menu (July 2016)

I ordered a latte as I usually do when I go out for brunch. I thought that it was a fantastic coffee, with its rich and creamy flavour. It came to the table very quickly after I ordered it and was a fantastic temperature. Usually the coffee comes to the table cold, but this one was perfect, not to hot but was warmer than ones I’ve had in the past.

Beth ordered a chai latte and she thought that it was fantastic! She said that it had a strong chai flavour unlike others that she’d had in the past.

Beth ordered the avocado and feta mash, which was served on dark rye, with herb pesto and toasted seeds and she also added a poached egg. She said that the flavours scrumptious! She said that the addition of the fresh herb pesto added and incredible depth of flavour to the dish, taking the dish from a 5 to fit for a King.

She said that the poached egg was cooked perfectly as she loves a soft running yolk and this egg definitely fit that bill. Beth also said that it was a great serving size and said that she felt quite full once she had finished. She said that she’d definitely order that dish again and would recommend it to all those avo smash lovers out there.

I ordered the ricotta and vanilla hotcake, which was topped with caramelised apple, crumbled shot pastry, cinnamon sugar and poppy seed Chantilly cream.

I thought that the plating of this dish was excellent! I loved the golden brown of the hotcake against the black plate. I thought that the flowers added the pops of colour that the dish needed.

The caramelised apple was rich and just heavenly! It added sweetness to the dish against the not so sweet hotcake. The poppy seed Chantilly cream was delicious. I’d never had that combination in a Chantilly cream before and I thought that it was fantastic!

The dish was actually quite rich and I found it quite difficult to finish. But I loved the flavour combinations and I would definitely order this dish again.

It was quite different to hotcakes I’ve had in the past, as it wasn’t as fluffy and thick. But I still really enjoyed it.

IMG_2500Beth and I both loved the look of Short Straw and felt that it was a relaxed environment. We loved the natural light that flooded into the café and we felt that it gave the café such warmth. Short Straw is a fantastic café to go visit when catching up with family or friends. We both felt that we could sit there all day and drink coffee and catch up on everything happening in our lives.

The staff members are all so friendly and we enjoyed chatting to them. They made us feel comfortable as soon as we walked in.

We would definitely go back to this café and it has been one of our favourite cafés that we’d been to.

So if you’re in the Hawthorn, I’d definitely recommend that you go and give Short Straw ago.
