How’s it going café lovers?
Welcome back to Cards and Cafés! I recently went to Norma Loves Joe with my good friend Beth for breakfast one Thursday morning in early August. I came across Norma Loves Joe when I was looking up places to eat in the Balwyn area. The name ‘Norma Loves Joe’ caught my eye and I just loved it!
There were plenty of parking spaces around the café, with a number of them being down the main road (Whitehorse Road) and a number down the side street near Norma Loves Joe.
FOOD & DRINKS
Norma Loves Joe has an interesting making it quite difficult just trying to pick one.
The following menu photos were taken at the beginning of August 2016 and might have changed since then.
I ordered a latte and both our drinks arrived quite soon after ordering them. They both arrived at the table quite hot, which was perfect for a cold Melbourne morning. My latte was fairly good; I liked the flavours and thought that it was relatively creamy.
Norma Loves Joe use the Axil Coffee Roasters blend, which is one of my favourites, but this wasn’t the best coffee I’ve had with that blend. I would have another coffee at this café, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to get one.
Coffee rating: 3/5
Beth ordered a chai latte and she seemed to enjoy it. She said that it wasn’t too sweet, but was the perfect combination of chai and sweetness.
We both loved the quotes that were with both coffees. We thought that was a fantastic idea and it was quite different to what we’d seen in the past.
Chai rating: 3/5
Beth ordered the Brioche French toast with banana, maple syrup, vanilla mascarpone, chocolate ice cream and Hershey’s chocolate syrup.
Beth thought the flavours in the dish were quite nice and that the meal was good for what it was. The toast was fresh enough and was made well, but it wasn’t anything special. But she said that the Hershey’s chocolate syrup was quite tasty and added an interesting element to the dish.
She said that it was a good meal for a small local café and is perfect if you are looking for something simple and not something over the top. She said that she would come back to Norma Loves Joe and eat this dish again if she was in the area and looking for a quick meal. But she wouldn’t go out of her way to come back here.
I ordered the whipped avocado and feta on toasted sourdough with fresh radish and a poached egg. I thought that it looked really great on the plate. I thought that the fresh radish looked great against the pale green of the avo.
But I’ll be honest; I was quite disappointed with the taste of the dish. I am a HUGE fan of smashed avo and it is one of my go to meals when I go out. But this was one of the worst ones I’ve had. The whipped avocado tasted like avocado dip instead on the fresh avocado that I was expecting. The avocado dip was incredibly salty and seemed to be over powered by garlic. Also I couldn’t taste any feta. I was incredibly disappointed by this dish and if I wanted to eat avocado dip I would have bought some from Coles, it wasn’t something I wanted to eat for breakfast.
I probably wouldn’t return to this café due to the disappointing meal. But at the end of the day, this is just my personal opinion and if this was something you’d enjoy them by all means go for it.
ENVIRONMENT & SERVICE
We both liked the look of Norma Loves Joe and thought that it was a very cosy little café. Beth loved the benches across the one wall and thought that it was very comfortable with the cushions that were provided.
The staff members were all very friendly and welcoming and we both thought that the service was fantastic. Both our drinks and our food came to the table very quickly which we thought was great.
Norma loves Joe have a few tables inside the café as well as a few outside the café overlooking Whitehorse Road.
