Hutch & Co (Lilydale) 8.5/10

G’day fellow café lovers!

Welcome back to Cards and Cafés! My good friend Beth and I were recently in Lilydale and thought that we’d try Hutch & Co.

Hutch & Co was very easy to find as it was just off Maroondah Highway and with that is a short drive from Eastland Shopping centre. Parking was also reasonably simple, as there are a number of parking places across the road from the café.

Both Beth and I loved Hutch & Co’s menu and we both thought that they had a number of mouth-watering dishes to choose from. We liked so many items on the menu that we both need to go back and try that other meal we had our eye on.

The following menu photo was taken in August 2016 and might have changed since.

Hutch & Co Menu (August 2016)

I ordered a latte and I thought that it was fantastic! I thought it had an incredible aroma and after taking a sip I thought that the flavour was strong and had a thick and creamy consistency.

Beth ordered a chai latte and she said that it was average and nothing special or different to what she’s had in the past at other cafés.

Beth ended up ordering her favourite dish, the French toast. The baked custard French toast was served with pistachio praline, mixed berries and smoked maple.

When it first arrived at the table Beth wondering if she’d still be hungry at the end, as she thought that it was a small serving size. But as the meal was quite rich, she became full before she knew it.

She said that she loved the caramelisation on the top, as it gave a fantastic sweet flavour along with an excellent crunchy texture. The crunch of the outside of the toast was a fantastic against the soft texture on the inside.

Beth also loved the simplistic plating, as she dislikes when cafés put too much on the plate. She thought that all the elements of the dish went perfect and each flavour complemented the other. She said that the cream was delicious, but wants to warn you that it is very rich.

She said that she would definitely order this dish again and would recommend it to all those sweet breakfast fans out there.

I ordered the sweet Benny, with two poached eggs on thick toasted brioche with slow braised pork, seed mustard hollandaise and fresh apple, I also ordered a hash brown.

I absolutely loved this dish. This has to one of the best eggs benedict that I’ve had! I thought that the poached eggs were cooked perfectly, the toast had a bit of a crunch, but wasn’t too crunchy that you felt like you were going to break your teeth and the flavour combination of the pork and apple was sheer perfection.

I thought that the pork had a great texture, it felt as if it could just melted in your mouth. The fresh apple helped to bring out the natural flavours of the pork and helped to cut out some of the richness.

I loved the flavour of the hollandaise and thought the seeded mustard added an interesting flavour that other hollandaise sauces usually miss. Finally the hash brown was AMAZING!!!! Seriously this was the BEST hash brown I’ve ever had. It was super crispy and crunch on the outside and the inside was soft and fluffy. So make sure you get a hash brown with whatever you order, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

I would most definitely order this dish again and would highly recommend it to all those eggs benny lovers out there. It is quite a rich dish, but I’m sure you’ll love it as much as I did.

IMG_2913We both thought that the employee’s were all very friendly and welcoming. They all greeted us with warm smiles and a hearty hello. It was quite busy when were got there on the Wednesday morning, so I can only imagine how busy it would be on the weekend. So I would recommend that you get there nice and early to get yourself a table.

We both thought that Hutch & Co was decorated beautifully. I loved the polished concrete floor against the wooden furniture and the white tiled wall. The black features on the table legs and metal shelf looked incredible against the other elements.

There are quite a number of tables in Hutch & Co and its great that the tables aren’t to close to each. Which makes it more comfortable and doesn’t give you the feeling that you are sitting on top of the people next to you.

There is also a seating area outside, which is great if you’ve brought your little fur baby with you.

We also thought that the food was more reasonably priced than other cafés we’d been to in the past.
