Liar Liar (Update) (Hawthorn) 8.5/10

What’s up café lovers?

Welcome back to Cards and Cafés! I recently went back to Liar Liar in Hawthorn as I really enjoyed my last food adventure there (click here to check my last review). Therefore, I thought that it was time to do an update and see if it was as fantastic as my last trip. This time I went with my friend Beth; I hadn’t seen her in over a month as I’d been overseas visiting my family South Africa, so we had much to catch up on.

Liar Liar is located just off Glenferrie Road and is within walking distance from Glenferrie train station and Swinburne University of Technology.

We ended up parking in the Coles parking lot, as I know you can almost always find a spot there. But if you’re lucky, you might find one on the main road.

Liar Liar is apart of the CCC group, which also includes a number of amazing cafes around Melbourne, including Sir Charles, Addict Food & Coffee, Blue Fox, Einstein’s 251, Loco Coffee and Prospect Espresso.

Liar Liar has a pretty interesting menu, with a number of mouth-watering breakfasts and lunches to choose from.

The following menu photos were taken in January 2017 and therefore might have since changed.

The coffee was pretty good, definitely one of the best coffee’s in Melbourne. It had a rich and creamy consistency, but it wasn’t quite hot enough.

Sorry! I forgot to take a photo as I was so excited to drink my first good coffee in over a month.

Liar Liar use the Proud Mary Coffee blend, which means you’ll almost always get a good coffee.

Coffee rating: 4/5   4 out of 5

Beth ordered a chai latte; she said that it had a great taste. It wasn’t weak like others she’s had in the past and wasn’t overly sweet.

Beth ordered the ricotta hotcakes with almond cream, berry coulis and maple syrup. When it first arrived at the table, we both commented on what a generous serving it was. There was almost enough to feed two people or one very, very hungry person.

She said that they were fantastic hotcakes and some of the best she’d had in a while. They were thick and fluffy and every mouthful just melted in your mouth.

She thought that the berry coulis was a great addition and was glad that it wasn’t too sour or too sweet. Just like in Goldie Locks and the Three Bears, they were just right.

She thought that the almond cream was an interesting element, as it had a lumpy texture and it took her a while to get use to it.

But overall she thought that it was a fantastic dish and that all the flavours balanced each other out perfectly.

She said that she would definitely order this dish again.

I ordered the Pants on Fire, which were baked eggs with spicy chorizo, pepperonata Napoli and warm Turkish bread. This isn’t a dish I would normally go for, but I thought that it was time to try something different.

I thought that it was quite a tasty dish, however the Napoli sauce was a little too overpowering, as I couldn’t really taste the eggs. But I thought that the addition of the spicy chorizo was a nice choice, as it brought a different flavour and texture to the rather mushy dish. I also loved the crunch of the golden Turkish break with the Napoli mix.

I personally wouldn’t order it again; as it’s not the type of dish I enjoy eating. But if you love baked eggs, then definitely give this one a go. I am pleased to say that this is incredibly filling and you’ll go home happy and full.

Liar Liar has a very relaxed atmosphere, even though it can get quite busy. There are always people in and out getting coffee. Most of the time you’ll have to wait for a table, as it’s very popular due to the number of people living, working and studying in the area. But the wait will definitely be worth it!

The staff members at Liar Liar are all super friendly and welcoming and they try and seat you as quickly as they can. I would suggest getting there before 10 am on Saturdays and Sundays to avoid the rush and before lunchtime during the week.

They have quite a number of tables inside the café, with a large shared table and seating along the window, as well as normal tables. They only have a couple of tables outside, which I’m sure will go very quickly during the warmer months.
