What’s Cracking Café Lovers?
Welcome to Cards and Cafés!
Tall Timber sits on Commercial Road in Prahran and is the perfect café for a quick breakfast or coffee on the run. Tall Timber is brought to you by the same group that started Coin Laundry , Station Street Trading Co. , Short Straw, Touchwood and Left Field and is definitely a must visit café.
I went on a Saturday morning in May with my good friend Beth for our weekly catch up. We arrived just after 10am and the café was already packed. The only free space was on their large shared table, which we didn’t mind, as we were hungry and didn’t want to wait.
So I would recommend getting there before 10am over the weekend period.
Parking was a mission to find, as most of the parking along Commercial Road and the surrounding side streets are all one hour parking zones, with a couple of two hours zones here and there.
FOOD & DRINKS
The menu at Tall Timber offers a wide variety of dishes, which would suit most tastes. The menu is easy to understand and follow, and doesn’t have big elaborate terms to describe simple elements. So no need to pull out Google to work out what things are.
Tall Timber use the Niccolo coffee blend for their milk based coffees, which they roast on-site.
The following menu photos were taken in May and might have changed since.
I decided to order a latte for a change and I thought that it was a pretty good coffee. It was nice and hot, without being burnt, and it had a rich and creamy taste.
Coffee rating: 4/5
Beth ordered a chai and she said that it was also nice and hot, which is quite rare these days. It had a nice spiced chai taste, but she personally found it a little too weak.
Chai rating: 3/5
For breakfast Beth had the French toast, which came with bruleed banana, candied hazelnuts, blueberries and cinnamon mascarpone. Even though it looked fantastic with all the bright colours from the berries, Beth said that it wasn’t her favourite version of French toast (and she’s tried quite a few). But this could be a matter of personal preference. She said that the toast was very thick and therefore the centre was very bready, as the egg mixture hadn’t soaked through. The outside was nice and crispy, but the inside was dry.
Beth said the bananas, nuts and cream that accompanied the French toast were great and helped to add more flavour to the slightly dry toast. But be warned that the cream was quite rich and that a little goes a long way.

I ordered breaky board, which was served with dukkah, a poached egg on ciabatta, hummus, smashed avo, muesli with vanilla bean yoghurt, macerated berries and a small orange juice.
Breakfast boards are great for indecisive people like myself, who can’t choose between sweet and savoury. With the breaky board you get a little of both (YAY). I loved how it was presented and think the idea of serving it on a piece of wood fits in with their name, ‘Tall Timber’.
I thought that this breaky board was fantastic! There was a very generous amount of avocado and hummus on the toast. The egg was cooked well and I loved the avocado and hummus flavour combination.
One egg was definitely enough and I don’t think I would have managed to eat two of them and still finish the muesli.
The muesli had a great flavour and I loved the crunchy texture against the smooth yoghurt and the soft macerated berries. The yoghurt wasn’t too sweet, which meant you could enjoy the natural flavours or the muesli.
Finally the fresh orange juice was great! It was refreshing and a great addition to the dish.
This meal is a great size and very filling and I didn’t need to eat anything until dinnertime.
I would definitely order this dish again.

ENVIRONMENT & SERVICE
Tall Timber is quite small inside, but it has an outside courtyard area, as well as seating along the street, so this is a great café to bring your dog to.
Their simple décor and their selection of pot plants down the centre of each shared/communal table definitely add character and bring the café to life. The beautiful pot plants give a burst of colour, and they add a bit more privacy when sharing a table with strangers.
The employees at Tall Timber are all very friendly. The service is pretty fast and there is always someone around to answer a question or take an order.
As the café is quite busy, you almost feel bad if you sit around for too long. Just keep in mind that others might be waiting for a table.
