Hello Café Lovers!
Welcome to Cards and Cafés! I recently went to Down the Rabbit Hole on two consecutive days with two different people, and it’s safe to say that I really enjoyed it.
There aren’t many cafes in the Templestowe area and I can imagine that the locals were excited when this café popped up. With friendly staff and a great menu, this café will be a hot spot in no time. The café also has a great kids’ menu with a number of options that any child will love (what child wouldn’t love a gingerbread waffle?)
FOOD & DRINKS
I loved that the menu had nods to Alice in Wonderland with the ‘Eat me’ and ‘Drink Me’ phrases on each side of the menu. There are a number of delicious dishes to choose from and you might have to come back a couple of times to try them all.
They also have the option of sparkling or still water for the table and offer free WIFI to their customers.
There is an excellent kids’ menu, with a number of great choices that the kids will go crazy for.
The following menu photos were taken in August 2017 and may have changed since.
The first time I visited, I ordered a hot chocolate. I personally wasn’t a fan and thought that it was pretty average. It was a basic hot chocolate and it wasn’t overly hot.
Hot chocolate rating: 2/5
The second time I visited, I ordered a cappuccino. I thought that it was fine, as it had a thick and creamy consistency and the strength was to my liking.
Coffee rating: 3/5
Both Tiana and I ordered the Breakfast Bagel. Tiana had ordered this a number of times in the past and she said that it never disappoints. It’s always good to hear that they stay constant and I can definitely recommend this dish.
The Breakfast Bagel comes with Istra bacon, a fired egg, aioli, tomato, haloumi and date relish on a New York Bagel.
I thought that the egg was perfectly cooked and loved the salty bacon against the rich egg yolk. I would have liked a bit more aioli, as I found that the dish could be a bit dry in some areas.
Even though the dish looks like a small serving, I found that I was quite full by the time I had finished.
I would definitely order this dish again.
The second time I went, both Anita and I ordered the Sour Morello Cherry Brioche, with house backed sour cherry brioche and house made preserves.
I absolutely loved this dish and thought that the serving size was rather generous.
The brioche itself was delicious. It was nice and fresh, and was full of flavour. It just melted in your mouth and, together with the house made jam, went down a treat.
I would also order this dish again in a heartbeat.
ENVIRONMENT & SERVICE
The service was fantastic and the staff members were very friendly. They welcomed and greeted us as soon as we walked in. They all had warm smiles on their faces; you could tell that they loved their job and enjoyed working there.
The café itself is a reasonable size and has quite a few tables spread throughout, as well as a large shared table at the front of the café. The large windows at the front and side of the café allow all the natural light to flood in, making the place feel warm and look inviting.
There is plenty of parking around the café, so you shouldn’t have any problems. You are also able to split bills at this café.
