Hello Café Lovers!
Welcome to Cards and Cafés!
Strap yourselves in and come on a food adventure with me.
I recently visited Miss Marmalade in Brunswick, bringing my friend Beth along with me for the ride.
An ex co-worker recommended this café to me. She loves it, so I thought I’d check it out.
This revamped townhouse is family friendly and has a fantastic kids menu. The café has a rustic feel. Its exposed bricks walls and interesting light fixtures will leave you in awe.
FOOD & DRINKS
The menu at Miss Marmalade has a good selection of dishes that will make your mouth water. I’m sure you’ll easily find something that you’ll want to sink your teeth into.
They also have an excellent kids menu, with a number of dishes to choose from.
Miss Marmalade uses the Clark Street Roasters blend of coffee.
The following menu photos were taken in September 2017 and the menu might have changed since.
Beth ordered a cappuccino, which had a nice, smooth consistency.. She enjoyed the blend and thought that the strength was perfect. It was a shame they didn’t sprinkle the chocolate powder as generously on this coffee as they did on mine.
Coffee rating: 4/5
I also ordered a cappuccino, which was quite enjoyable. It was rich and creamy and it came to the table hot, which is also a bonus as most places serve their coffee lukewarm.
Coffee rating: 3/5
For breakfast, Beth ordered the Farmer’s Market, with hash and sweet potato, cherry tomatoes, the pick of market vegetables, a poached egg, micro herbs, Parmesan, and smashed avocado on sourdough. This dish is vegetarian and has a vegan and gluten free option.
Beth loved this meal. It was flavourful and quite different to what other cafés are offering. The vegetables were cooked well and the herbs were vibrant, bringing the dish to life. The addition of the Parmesan cheese gave it a nice bite. The little hashes were crunchy and delicious, leaving her smiling after each bite.
Beth said that she would definitely order this dish again.
I ordered the Sweet Potato Stack, which came on a bed of baby spinach, with grilled haloumi, two poached eggs, and béarnaise sauce. This dish has a vegetarian option and is gluten free.
I love sweet potato, so I couldn’t go past this dish. It was cooked perfectly, soft and easy to cut through, yet not mushy. It was seasoned well, and the saltiness of the haloumi helped to cut down on some of the natural sweetness of the sweet potato.
The poached eggs were cooked well and each element worked together perfectly. However, the béarnaise sauce did made the dish a bit rich.
I would definitely order this dish again.
ENVIRONMENT & SERVICE
The café was quite busy when we arrived that Saturday morning, and we were lucky to find a table inside. The staff was friendly, we were welcomed and seated straight away. Their warm smiles made us feel right at home.
The environment was relaxed and you could see that this café was a local favourite. We felt quite comfortable to sit and chat, without feeling the need to rush and make room for the next group of people.
The café has a number of tables outside, which would definitely be the place to sit during the warmer months. They have a few tables inside the café and a large shared table at the back.
The service was fine and all drinks and food arrived in a reasonable time.
