Penta (Elsternwick) 8/10

Hi Café Lovers!

Welcome to Cards and Cafés!

From the same team that brought us Legacy, Temperance Society, and My Other Brother (MOB) Espresso comes Penta in Elsternwick.

This trendy little café has quickly become one of the most popular cafes in Melbourne and, with their beautifully plated food and their fantastic décor, it’s not hard to see why.

I went to Penta on a Saturday morning with two of my friends, Kate and Beth, for our weekly food adventure. After seeing so many beautiful photos on their Instagram page, we couldn’t wait to go.

The café was incredibly busy when we arrived and we were lucky to find a table outside.

There is plenty of parking around the café, so I’m sure you won’t have a problem finding a spot.

FOOD & DRINKS

We all thought that the menu was great. It had quite a few options and each dish sounded enjoyable.

They also have a great selection of drinks, from smoothies to shakes and even alcoholic drinks for those afternoon brunches.

The following menu photo was taken in October 2017 and the menu might have changed since.

Beth ordered a matcha, which she enjoyed. It was the perfect strength for her and didn’t have that bitter aftertaste.

Kate ordered a chai latte which was great! However, she wished they had put the honey on the side instead of at the bottom of the cup. This meant she couldn’t adjust the sweetness to her liking.

I ordered a cappuccino. It had a great flavour and had a rich and creamy consistency. I just wished that it had been hotter. I have a feeling that it might have been sitting on the counter while the others were being made, so it wasn’t overly hot.

For breakfast, Beth ordered the Nutella Panna Cotta, with a nut butter banana sushi, honey joy crumb, strawberries, pomegranate molasses and torched marshmallows; this dish is gluten free.

It was beautifully presented and all the elements looked like they were carefully placed. You can definitely see the time and effort that has gone into creating this dish.

The Panna Cotta was fantastic and tasted just like Nutella, almost as if she had stuck her spoon into the jar. It was smooth and silky and went down a treat. The fresh fruit helped to cut through the richness of the Nutella. She loved the honey joy crumb and loved the crunch that it brought to the dish, which contrasted beautifully with the soft elements.

Finally, the toasted marshmallows were a welcomed addition and, let’s be honest, who doesn’t enjoy a toasted marshmallow?

Overall, she loved this dish and would definitely order it again. All the Nutella fans out there, this is the dish for you.

Kate ordered Penta Benedict, with braised beef cheek, watercress, poached eggs, jalapeno hollandaise on sweet potato waffles.

Kate said that this dish was delicious. However, she thought that the beef was a bit bland and had a few fatty bits in it, which put her off a bit.

But her eggs were cooked well and she loved the jalapeno hollandaise, as it had quite an interesting flavour.

Finally, the sweet potato waffles were great, as they had a fantastic crunch to them.

Finally, I ordered the Orange Blossom Hotcakes, with grapefruit curd, cacao nibs, meringue, strawberries and vanilla mascarpone; this dish is suitable for vegetarians.

It was plated beautifully, and I loved the golden brown of the hotcakes against the pops of colour from the fresh strawberries and flowers, and the light brown of the meringue.

The hotcakes themselves were great. They had a subtle orange taste and were nice and fluffy on the inside. The grapefruit curd was full of flavour and added an extra element of citrus to the dish.

I loved the meringues. They had a slight crunch on the outside while the inside was slightly soft.

However, the dish was a bit on the small side in comparison to what you would get at other cafes for the same price.

Still, I would definitely order the dish again.

ENVIRONMENT & SERVICE

Penta had a really modern feel. Because it was so busy inside we sat outside, which ended up being the better option, as it seemed to be very noisy inside and we would have struggled to hear each other.

The café has a number of tables outside and this is definitely the spot to sit during the warmer months or if you have your dog with you. Inside the café, they have quite a few tables, as well as bench seating across the main window.

The service was a bit slow initially, as it took ages before anyone came to take our order. I feel they might have forgotten about us, but as they were very busy I can understand.

The staff were all friendly and they try and seat you as quickly as they can. I’m sure you’ll find it worth the wait.

Even though the café was very busy, we still found the atmosphere quite relaxing. However, inside it might have been a different story. But we felt comfortable to sit and drink our coffees at a leisurely pace.

We would definitely come back to this café.
