Hello Café Lovers!
Welcome to Cards and Cafés!
Mavis the Grocer is located in Abbotsford on the site of an old milk bar. This simple café is warm and welcoming and the beautiful windows allow all the natural light to flood in. Sitting at the window is just place to relax on your days off and watch the world go by.
Walking in, you automatically feel welcome and you can’t wait to sit down and enjoy a nice hot cup of coffee.
My friend Beth and I went on Saturday morning and we were lucky to get seated right away. As the morning went on, the café became quite busy and we soon saw that this is a local favourite.
There is plenty of parking surrounding the café, both down the main road or one of the main side streets.
FOOD & DRINKS
The menu at Mavis the Grocer isn’t the largest, but I’m sure you’ll still find something on their menu that you’ll want to dig into. They also have a small kids menu, with a couple of great choices for your little ones.
The café uses Seven Seeds coffee blend for their coffees.
The following menu photos were taken in October 2017 and it might have changed since.
Beth ordered a chai latte. There was a generous amount of silky froth on top, but she was a little disappointed about the small size of the teapot and only managed to get one and half cups from it. But she said that the flavour was good and the sweetness was to her liking.
Chai rating: 3/5
I ordered a cappuccino, which had a great flavour and a thick and creamy consistency. It was nice and hot when it arrived at the table, which was just what I needed on that cold morning.
Coffee rating: 3/5
For brunch, Beth ordered the Squash and Pearl Barley Fritters, with avocado, Danish feta, tortilla crisps, tendrils, poached eggs and onion jam on toast.
Beth really enjoyed the flavours of the dish and thought the onion jam was a highlight. The fritters were quite dense but delicious, especially when paired with the onion jam. All the flavours married together perfectly and each helped to enhance the other. She would have liked the tortilla crisps to be smaller, as she found it difficult to bite through. Finally, the poached eggs were cooked well.
The dish filled her up quickly and left her satisfied for the rest of the afternoon.
I decided to order the Potato Hash Cake, with grilled mushrooms, pumpkin hummus, poached eggs, and dukkah.
Even though the serving looks quite small, it filled me up rather fast.
The eggs were cooked well and I loved the flavours of the rich egg yolk mixed with the potato hash. The potato hash has an excellent crunch on the outside, while the inside was still soft and fluffy.
I also really enjoyed the pumpkin hummus and thought that the flavour combination of the two elements was delicious!
I would definitely order this dish again.
ENVIRONMENT & SERVICE
The staff at Mavis the Grocer are all friendly and welcome you with warm smiles. We found that the service was quite quick and we received our drinks and food in a reasonable time.
However, the staff didn’t really check on us to see how our food was or to offer us another coffee.
The large windows allow all the natural light to flood in, making the café feel warm and inviting. The café is small inside and has a lovely courtyard area, which would be the perfect spot to sit during the warmer months. Unfortunately it was cold and raining when we were there, so we had to sit inside.
They also have a nice outside area along the road, which would be a great spot to sit if you have your dog with you.
The atmosphere was really relaxed and we didn’t feel any pressure to eat quickly to make room for the next group.
